First Look: "How to Train Your Dragon" Reimagining now offers "Jaw Drop Realism"

Dreamworks Animation's 2010 animated film "How to Train Your Dragon" has been remade again as a live-action/animated hybrid film by Dreamworks parent company Universal Pictures.

Universal says "live-action reimagining" uses "state-of-the-art visual effects" to bring "hiccups and toothless" stories to life with jaw-dropping realism.

Dean Devrova, one of the directors of the original animated version 1, also directed the hybrid remake.

The live-action version features Mason Thames as Hick, Nico Parker as Astrid, and Gerard Butler as Chief Stoic the Vast (Butler also provides the character's voice in the animated version).

The cast also includes Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwin, Ruth Codd, Peter Serafinowicz, and Murray MacArthur.

Debroix defended his decision to remake the film in a first-look video, saying, "It felt like a great opportunity to not only direct a live-action film, but frankly dive into the world I miss, so I decided to train the dragon." We decided to reexamine how to use it."

Whether it's legitimate enough to remake an animated film that stands well alone is yet to be seen. Ironically, based on a 2d animated film directed by Debroix with Chris Sanders, it will be in theaters in 2025-6-13, just weeks after Disney released a hybrid live・action/animated remake of Lilo & Stitch.

In addition to directing the film, DeBlois also wrote a new How to Train Your Dragon. He has produced with Mark Pratt (Wicked, La La Land) and Adam Siegel (Drie, 2Guns).
