Television Academy Announces This Year's Emmy Award Winners
The Television Academy has announced the winners of this year's Emmy Jury Awards in several categories, including Motion Design and Individual Achievement in Animation.
Last year, Netflix productions dominated the Jury Awards in the animation category, winning five of the six awards. This year, there were fewer but more diverse entries. The jury recognized four artists, none from the same studio.
Nevertheless, Netflix did not leave empty-handed. Entergalactic's lead character designer, Mavis Ruiz Cruz, was recognized for her work on a musical special created by Scott “Kid Cuddy” Meschedi and directed by Fletcher Moors.
The Simpsons joined its extensive Emmy trophy collection for character layout artist Nik Ranieri's work on the episode “Lisa's Boy Scouts.” Ranieri is now a two-time honoree, having previously won an Individual Achievement Emmy in 2021 for her work on the “The Simpsons” episode “Wad Goals.”
Animation director Maya Edelman was recognized for her color work on the Paramount+ short film “More than I Want to Remember,” which screened at numerous film festivals, including Annecy, SXSW, and Tribeca. This is Edelman's second Emmy award; in 2018, she was part of the motion design team that won a juried Emmy for their work on “Broad City.”
The Emmy jury selected Arum Redondo, who directed animation for the “Screecher's Reach” episode of Star Wars: Visions, produced by Cartoon Saloon and directed by studio co-founder Paul Young.
This year's jury also recognized the motion design team for Disney+'s Marvel series “Ms. Marvel,” directed by Ian Spendloff.
Films nominated for the judging categories are reviewed by a panel of experts from the appropriate peer group, and one film may win an Emmy, two or more may win, or none may win. As a result, there are no nominations. Instead, there will be one level of evaluation and voting.
This year's Emmy Awards will be presented at the 75th Annual Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Saturday, January 6 and Sunday, January 7, 2024 at the Peacock Theater. An edited presentation will air on FXX on Saturday, January 13, at FXX on 13.
