2019 Academy Awards for Best Animated Short: List of Nominees (Exclusive)

It's that time of year again when the Academy Award critics step into the limelight and begin predicting the frontrunners in the various Oscar races.

However, one category that no one is heard to “critique” is the Best Animated Short Film category, because there are no critics in the animation industry, and even if there were none, what would be the nominees? This is because there are no critics in the animation industry, and if there were, no one would know what the nominees are. Cartoon Brew is committed to solving at least half of that problem.

We compile lists of films nominated for the Academy's Animated Short Films category throughout the year. As Blue readers already know, short films provide a unique space for innovation and experimentation that no other animation platform offers. And we believe that as more Academy members understand the breadth and scope of the nominees, they will be able to make more informed decisions about the most deserving short films of the year.

There are three paths to eligibility for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short:

Here are some standard disclaimers: Even if all the films on our list are technically eligible, whether they take the extra step of entering the Academy Award competition It is up to the filmmakers to decide whether or not to do so. This year we also tried to identify films that qualified through the public release route, but that can (and often does) happen very quietly, so there may be other films that qualified without our knowledge. The entire official list of qualified films will not be known until the Academy presents its long list of qualified films to the membership in October.

So while this list is not perfect, it is the only list that someone will publish for the animated short film category, and you will find most (if not all) of this year's Academy Award nominees below. Last year's list of qualifying films included nine of the ten finalists and all five of the nominees in the category.

This list was compiled by publicly available information. In alphabetical order:
